Bonn

Love

For the first half of my adult life Bonn was the capital of (West) Germany and now that the capital of (re-united) Germany has been located in Berlin for a few decades, I was curious to see what has become of Bonn.

Three nights in the city has given me a bit of insight. Certainly I prefer the small city “feel” of the place as compared with nearby Köln or Düsseldorf. Leaving aside its past function as the capital, it seems to have two claims to fame. First, it is where Beethoven was born and grew up. Secondly, it is where Haribo originated. The “bo” in the name… The “Hari” comes from the founder’s name – Hans Riegel. The company has a shop in the city centre and a factory outlet in the suburbs.

I ignored both these phenomena during my visit, for no particular reason. I did go to a football match, but in Köln (Viktoria Köln 1904 v Saarbrücken in the 3.Liga).

Friday Night

I did take on the local Parkrun (at Rheinaue). I did take the U-Bahn upriver to Königswinter and go up the Drachenfels on the historic Drachenfelsbahn.

My visit coincided with Karneval. I had not realised. Nor had I realised what a big event it is in the social calendar. Well, now I know. If you have an aversion to drunks in fancy dress everywhere at all times of the day and night, pick a different weekend. I try to be tolerant. In the long distant past I had my moments of drunkenness and fancy dress. I try.

It all seemed very good natured, and that helped.

The Parkrun was fun. I ran well and enjoyed running a course for the first time. Those little novelties help to keep my interest sharp, and my test my ability to pace myself well.

When I come back to Germany sometimes I do not get around to doing the touroid type stuff. I am content just relaxing back into the local way of life – coffee and cake in the afternoon… beer and Bratwurst at the football (or ice hockey).

I am happy with my decision to visit the city. Will I go back? I doubt it, but never say “never”!
