This was my third visit to the city, although the last one seems like a long time ago. On the previous occasions I stayed in the west of the city centre, and this time I opted for https://www.schulzhotels.com/en/ opposite Ostbahnhof.
That choice worked in well with my arrival by train from Köln – Ostbahnhof was its destination. My ICE journey was pleasant and comfortable, although 6 hours feels like a long stint. I paid €96 for a 1st class seat, booking and paying in advance with no changes allowed. I think I got a discount for being ancient. Certainly it compares well with the travel time and cost of flying, and it is more relaxing.

I was impressed by the Schulz. My kind of place. It helped that my request for a quiet room resulted in me getting a corner room with a view of the Spree and the Wall. It is definitely on my “would go back” list. It cost £90 per night inclusive of the usual buffet breakfast.
My main sightseeing activity was to visit the Stasi Museum, located a bit further east in the city but an easy journey by SBahn and UBahn.

It was fascinating to learn more about system of control measures put in place ranging from huge numbers of Stasi employees to a massive system of informers who were bribed or coerced into betraying friends, colleagues and neighbours.

As far as gastronomy is concerned, https://www.volkskammer.de/ close to my hotel gave me a wonderful Sunday lunch. It is intended to be a retro DDR-themed experience, but since the food and service were excellent (plus everything on the menu seemed to be available) I have to question the authenticity.

Well, my bag is packed again and it is time to check out of the hotel ahead of another lunchtime train, this time to…
