Warsaw, Old Friend

Palace of Culture and Science

I visited Warsaw twice in 1998, both times for work – meetings at the Ministry for Telecommunications.

The project budget was tight and in those days the way to get a cheap flight was to buy an APEX ticket and stay Saturday night. It meant a couple of weekends away from my family, but it did give me two Saturdays to explore the city.

This week (April 2025) I stopped overnight in Warsaw on my travels between Kraków and Gdańsk just to renew the acquaintance.

Koneser Street Art

For something completely different I chose to stay on the east bank of the river, in the Prag district. I saw some mention of it being gentrified. My hotel (the Moxy) is well suited to that concept being populated by large numbers of pseudo-hipsters (the brand targets that market). The Prag one is located in a converted and re-developed industrial property and is now home to a vodka museum, art galleries, Google and a swathe of over-priced restaurants.

I ignored them all.

I did have a wonderful pizza in a real neighbourhood place – Pizza Piu if you happen to be passing.

Vodka Museum

The hotel was convenient for the tram system, and being Poland it was absurdly cheap. Efficient too. I paid 15zł for a 24 hour ticket.

Pseudo-Hipster Moxy

Overall, I am delighted I chose to re-visit the city and happy with my choice of hotel. I am too old to be a pseudo-hipster so I have an exemption.
